Jumia Opens Branch in Ibanda Town

Concerns over long turnaround periods raised by clients based outside Uganda's capital, Kampala, have prompted Jumia Uganda to open a branch in Ibanda. The new branch aims to serve residents of Ibanda, Kazo, Kitagwenda, Kamwengye, and Buhweju.

Jumia is an online shopping platform where clients order items using mobile applications on smartphones or programs installed on computers. Payment is made through mobile money platforms provided by different telecommunications companies in the country.

In the past, this digital channel of transaction worried many people due to the lengthy delivery periods, raising suspicions over money sent through mobile money.

The Ibanda branch is located opposite Boosters Furniture, at the corner connecting Bufunda Street and Mpiira Street.

According to Ibanda's branch manager, the decision to open an office in Ibanda aims to bring services closer to clients, quickly respond to concerns raised, and build trust with them.

"During the customer experience journey, our clients felt that Kampala was far, and the turnaround time made them uncomfortable. But now, with this office, we believe we can get feedback very quickly," he said.

The branch will also serve as a main pick-up station where clients can collect their ordered items.
With digital security being a major concern, identification of persons claiming items from the collection or pickup center is crucial to prevent fraud.

"I normally ask for the order number as the first identity to see if it's the right package ordered. I then proceed to ask for a national ID of the client to verify," said Polline, the hub manager.
A report by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) indicated an increase in the number of internet subscribers. The report states that nearly 20 million Ugandans now have access to the internet, about 50% of the population.

According to Kamukama James, a resident of Ibanda, the public should embrace online platforms for transactions.

"Ibanda, being a fast-growing municipality, needs online businesses like Jumia because it saves time. Now that it has come to Ibanda, there's no need to travel to Kampala. This is one of the things the government is promoting through the Ministry of ICT, so let's embrace digital technology," he said.
