The Kings Lake In Ibanda District
The Kings Lake in Ibanda District.
The famous historical pool of Kijongo as referred to by Captain Lugard when he visited in 1891 , today known as akayanja ka Kosiya (RIP) the legacy lives on
Akayanja k’Omugabe in Kijongo Ibanda popularly known as Akayanja ka Kosiya, is “ The pool of Kijongo” as recorded in the annals of History by Nuwa Mbaguta ( 1867 to 11th August 1944),he died slightly before our Tibuhaburwa was born.
It was the only place where all the Kings of Nkore starting from Rwebishengye (Son of Kahaya I) would perform a cleansing ritual that lasted 4 days before ascending the throne.
This ritual was administered by a priestesses called a Murogo (Kibubura was from this lineage of Barogo diviners).
It is reported that Kayaya I hand claimed back present day Ibanda from the Omukama, and annexed it to the Nkore Kingdom, in doing so he avenged his great grandfather( Nyabugaro Bwera, Ntare I) who had lost the battle at the same Kijongo Hill to the Omukama.
Myths surrounds the formation of this lake (etuutu y’oMugabe, Nyabugaro, Ntare I after being defeated by Omukama in the same battle Omugabe cried and that lake was formed immidiately .
It's also said that Mugabe of Nkore would disappear in the water during the cleansing/purification ceremony and appear after sometime to enter Bwakahaya (the name of orugo, with two white cows.
Bwakahaya was a kraal by the shore of this lake/pool)…mystical also, is that that a huge snake with hair resides at the bottom of this water body, which swallows all the fish that many have attempted to put there. GeoScientists, though, would call it a crater lake, water relatively warm and the Mugabe found it revivifying to bathe in this water(with a pH out of the normal range), after long hunting sprees in the neighboring woods of Buzimba and Kitagwenda.
Trekkers Club lbanda, a social hiking club, will be hiking to this amazing place on 26th January. To be part of the hike, WhatsApp the administration on 0782570256/0778718930
