Marriage Procedures in Ankore:
1. Okurigira - to get a crush on a prospective spouse.
2. Okuriima - to choose a wife, either by the prospective groom or by proxy.
3. Okuhampura/okwetaatsya - to elope with the consent of the girl, without paying bride wealth.
4. Okukiriza - to abduct and marry without the girl's or her parent's consent.
5. Okwanjura - to be introduced by the girl to her family in a small and intimate ceremony.
6. Okugamba obugyenyi - the groom's party of 8 to 12 people visit the bride's home to officially announce their intention to marry their daughter.
7. Okusiima eka - the bride's family sends a number of people to assess the groom's home.
8. Okucweerwa ebintu - the process of deciding bridal wealth and attendant gifts.
9. Okujuga - to pay the bride wealth.
10. Okuriira ente - the bride's party sends a group of people, normally comprising those with a voracious appetite, to decide if the cows are worthy as bride wealth.
11. Okuhingira - to officially wed the bride to the groom at the bride's home in an elaborate ceremony attended by relatives and friends of the bride.
Only a previously agreed upon number of people escort the groom to this ceremony.
12. Okushagarira - the bride's family gives a number of cows to the bride to take to her new home.
13. Okutaatsya - the wedding party attended by relatives and friends of the groom.
Only a previously agreed upon number of people, known as enshagarazi, escort the bride to this ceremony.
14. Okuza omurusiika - the bride remains indoors without doing any work for a period of about 1 month.
In a section of the Ankole people, she would also have to grow fat during this period.
15. Okwaruka - to visit the bride's home for the first time after the wedding.
